"Was that supposed to be a test?"

I suspect that it had been on his mind since I invited him to the gym. He only said it when he had walked me back to my place, and I had just let us both in.

"It wasn't," I insisted. "Tonio is one of my best friends. I thought you should meet him."

"But I passed anyway, didn't I?"

"Ugh. You're so arrogant sometimes."

It wasn't a test, but there was a pattern to my introducing a guy to Tonio. It wasn't just because I wanted to stop seeing them; I also didn't want to sleep with them.

Again, this was one of those things that my barkada didn't get about me.

Tonio thought I was needlessly being prudish about the whole thing. "What's the big deal? You've done it before. It's the same thing but with someone else."

Mary and the rest praised me for my principles and said yes, I definitely shouldn't have sex with anyone I didn't feel was the man I would marry.

Truth was, my views were somewhere in the middle. I, too, knew that it wasn't about fireworks and soulmates (well, not always), so to me it wasn't that big of a deal. But even so, I didn't feel the need to do it with every guy who asked. Didn't like that "settling" vibe I got from them.

Obviously I didn't get that from Dante at all. He was the kind of guy I could say no to, and already did say no to, just because, and he didn't push it. I liked that I could say no and not worry if he would call me again—but then again he always did.

I liked knowing that if he wasn't getting what he wanted, when he wanted it, he could just leave.

I liked that he hadn't left yet.

We had been alone together in my tiny apartment before, but tonight there was something different about us. Or maybe it was me, because in my mind I definitely crossed that line. Dante knew it too, even if I never said so. There was something about the way he pulled me into his arms—right after I had called him arrogant—that was a bit more urgent than usual. When he kissed me, I was in the middle of saying something and instead it sounded like he had muffled a moan, and I let him think that, rising to the tips of my toes so I could circle my arms around his neck. He knew that when I did that, he could safely lift me off the ground. But that night it was faster, our tumble onto my small bed not as smooth.

Who cared about my friends' rules? I wasn't like them, and hadn't been like them for years. I had to go my own way, make decisions according to what I wanted.

And I want Dante now.
